About this position

Penn State University Park is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar in Particle Astrophysics to work with Prof. Stephanie Wissel in the Wissel Lab, the Particle Astrophysics group, and the Center for Multi-Messenger Astrophysics at the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos.

The project focuses on experimental searches for the highest-energy neutrinos, especially ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrinos and multi-messenger astrophysics. The successful candidate will help develop and build the Hybrid Elevated Radio Observatory for Neutrinos (HERON), including a phased array system, and use it to search for tau neutrinos from a high-elevation mountain. The role also includes analysis, simulations, monitoring, and instrument development.

Research themes mentioned in the post include radio detection, particle astrophysics, astrophysical and cosmogenic neutrinos, and related experimental instrumentation. There may also be opportunities for field campaigns to Argentina. The lab environment connects to other major experiments such as ARA, IceCube-Gen2, RNO-G, PUEO, and PBR.

Eligibility: a PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, or a related field is required. Experience in radio instrumentation and/or particle astrophysics is helpful but not mandatory. The postdoctoral scholar is also expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to outreach.

Funding and terms: this is a full-time term position with Penn State benefits. Continuation beyond the term depends on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding.

How to apply: submit the application electronically through Penn State Workday as an external applicant. Include a CV, cover letter, and brief statement of research interests. Arrange for two reference letters to be submitted through Academic Jobs Online.

Deadline: to receive full consideration, apply by 2026-12-04. The search will continue until a suitable candidate is found.
