About this position

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Chemist Postdoctoral Scholar in the Energy Technologies and Systems division for research at the intersection of polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, and sodium-ion batteries.

The project focuses on designing functional polymers for reversible battery binders and conductive coatings, synthesizing and processing inorganic electrode materials, fabricating composite electrodes, and evaluating electrochemical performance and material recoverability. The work also includes developing circular battery concepts such as debonding, disassembly, separation, and recovery, with an emphasis on linking polymer structure, electrode architecture, battery performance, and recyclability.

Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. in polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related field. Strong hands-on experience in polymer synthesis, functionalization, purification, and characterization is expected, along with experience in inorganic electrode materials, composite electrode fabrication, electrochemical testing, and analytical methods such as NMR, FTIR, GPC, DSC/TGA, XRD, and SEM.

Desired experience includes air-sensitive synthesis, Schlenk or glovebox work, reversible or stimuli-responsive polymers, conductive polymers, sodium-ion battery materials, electrode recycling and design-for-circularity, surface functionalization, advanced microscopy, and computational or data-driven analysis.

This is a full-time, 2-year postdoctoral appointment with possible renewal based on performance and funding. Salary starts at $7,029/month and may go up to $8,152/month. Benefits include health coverage, retirement options, PTO, paid holidays, and postdoctoral paid family leave.

Apply via the Berkeley Lab jobs portal with a cover letter and CV/resume. Priority consideration is given to applications submitted by 2026-11-06.
