About this position
Pennsylvania State University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar for the BBH Social Determinants of Health Lab in the United States. The position is led by Dr. Xue Zhang and focuses on social determinants of health, health disparities, and population health, with a particular emphasis on rural communities.
The postdoctoral scholar will use an intersectional and interdisciplinary approach to study individual, interpersonal, community, and structural factors shaping disparities in health. Research areas of interest include substance use, mental health, healthcare access and utilization, aging, and mortality.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in public health, biostatistics, social science, or a related field. Strong writing skills are required, along with a solid quantitative background in statistics and/or spatial analysis. Experience with large publicly available datasets such as HRS, All of Us, ABCD, YRBS, and BRFSS is strongly preferred. Advanced methods such as structural equation modeling, multilevel modeling, and longitudinal analysis are especially relevant.
Responsibilities include conducting independent data management and statistical analyses, collaborating on research projects, developing manuscripts for publication, assisting with extramural funding proposals (e.g., R21, R01, foundation grants), and contributing to interdisciplinary projects on rural health disparities, healthy aging, substance use, and community health.
This is a full-time term position. Continuation beyond the initial term depends on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding. Penn State notes a competitive benefits package for full-time employees, but no stipend amount is listed.
How to apply: External applicants should click the Workday application link and submit a CV, one-page cover letter, one-page research statement, contact information for three references, and 2–3 writing samples. Current Penn State employees or students should apply internally through Workday. Informal inquiries may be sent to [email protected].
