About this position
Vanderbilt University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Sociology for an NIH-funded project on occupation, labor force participation, aging, and cognitive functioning in later life. The project is led by Dr. Rachel Donnelly and Dr. Lucie Kalousová and focuses on how occupational characteristics and work histories across the life course shape later-life cognitive outcomes.
The position is based at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, United States, with potential hybrid arrangements. The appointment is initially for 12 months with a possible one-year extension depending on performance. Compensation includes a $70,000 annual salary, health insurance, employee benefits, a $2,500 annual travel budget, and a $2,000 computing equipment budget.
Applicants should have training in sociology, gerontology, population health, or a related field, along with strong quantitative data analysis skills and experience with complex national survey data. Experience with aging-related research, the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and/or sequence analysis is especially valued. The scholar will spend 75% of their time on project work and 25% on independent research related to the project theme.
The successful candidate will be mentored by the PIs, have opportunities to lead and co-author manuscripts and conference presentations, and participate in the Lifespan, Policy, and Health Lab and the Center for Research on Inequality and Health seminar series.
To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, writing sample, and contact information for three professional references via Interfolio. Applications are reviewed starting September 30, 2026 and will continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
