About this position

Postdoctoral Scholar – Research Associate at the University of Southern California / USC Information Sciences Institute in Arlington, VA.

This is a postdoctoral opening in a multi-institution, DARPA-funded beyond-CMOS spintronics program focused on developing a three-terminal digital logic switch based on spintronic elements. The work spans physics, electrical engineering, and materials science, with a strong mix of theory and experiment.

Research areas include: quantum transport modeling using NEGF; first-principles materials and interface calculations using DFT (VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO, or equivalent); atomistic spin dynamics and micromagnetic simulation (Vampire, OOMMF, MuMax3); compact device model extraction; device fabrication; thin-film deposition; electrical and magnetic characterization; cryogenic transport; FMR; and high-frequency lock-in measurements.

Eligibility highlights: PhD awarded or imminent in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; demonstrated competence in both computational and experimental techniques; strong publication record. Preferred experience includes spintronic materials, beyond-CMOS platforms, MATLAB/Python, and multi-PI or government-funded collaborations.

Funding and terms: competitive salary commensurate with experience, access to USC-ISI cleanroom facilities and the broader USC research ecosystem, and involvement in a high-visibility DARPA program with publication and patent opportunities. Initial appointment is 18 months, renewable up to 36 months subject to performance and funding.
