About this position
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) / Janelia Research Campus is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scientist for the Schulze Lab in Ashburn, Virginia, United States. The role sits at the intersection of systems neuroscience, computer vision, pose tracking, behavioral machine learning, and virtual reality (VR), with a strong emphasis on building and integrating custom hardware/software pipelines to study neural circuits underlying collective behavior and social cognition.
The lab investigates how individual traits, internal state, sex differences, and stress shape behavior and decision-making in social groups. Research methods include realistic closed-loop VR experiments, multi-animal tracking, behavioral classification, two-photon calcium imaging, molecular phenotyping at single-cell resolution, and ultrastructural analyses. The postdoc will design VR paradigms, develop software for ML-based multi-animal studies, analyze whole-brain activity and behavioral data, and collaborate closely with the lab’s VR specialist and the broader Janelia community.
Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. in neuroscience, computer science, engineering, or a closely related field; a hybrid background combining software-hardware integration and computational/ML skills; experience with complex rigs such as VR systems for behavioral neuroscience; strong communication skills; and the ability to carry out complex experiments reliably. Interest in inter-individual differences, sexually dimorphic traits, and stress-related social behavior is especially relevant.
Funding and benefits: competitive compensation, comprehensive health and welfare benefits, conference support, one-on-one mentorship, access to engineering and imaging facilities, and on-campus amenities including childcare, gyms, housing, and shuttle service. HHMI notes a Postdoc 00 salary of $74,200 annually for 0–1 year post-PhD experience.
Deadline: 26 Sep 2026.
How to apply: submit the application through the Nature Careers external application page. Review the job description and apply before the closing date.
