About this position

University of Vienna is advertising a postdoctoral opening in the Faculty of Physics for the research group Physics of Nanostructured Materials (PNM). The project focuses on the fundamental physics of 2D materials and other low-dimensional/nanostructured materials, including atomic-scale structural manipulation using electron and ion irradiation, advanced correlative microscopy, atomic-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, atomic-force microscopy, and high energy-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy.

This is a University Assistant postdoctoral position and is explicitly a maternity leave substitute. The role includes research, teaching, and administration. Responsibilities include publishing in peer-reviewed journals, supporting doctoral students and other group members, co-teaching a Python course, and contributing to meetings, conferences, and other academic tasks.

Eligibility highlights: completed PhD in physics or a related field; hands-on experience with atomic-resolution STEM/TEM, AFM, and related methods; Python programming experience required; teaching experience in Python and research-based laboratory courses is an advantage; mentoring experience with bachelor’s and master’s students is an advantage; excellent English (C1 or equivalent); ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Funding and terms: full-time employment (40 hours/week) with a gross salary of EUR 5,014.30 per month on a 14-salary basis. The contract is limited until 8 April 2027, with a possible extension but no guarantee.

Application: apply via the University of Vienna portal. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, publication list, teaching evidence if available, and degree certificates. Application deadline: 2 November 2026.
