About this position

The University of Vienna is advertising a University Assistant (Praedoc) position at the Faculty of Economics in the Technology and Innovation Management working group at the Institute for Accounting, Innovation and Strategy.

This is a pre-doctoral / PhD-track opening focused on the intersection of law and economics, innovation management, and regulatory burden. The project, “We are expanding the bureaucracy index”, develops data-based measures of the volume and complexity of legal texts, starting with German federal law and expanding to EU law and comparable indices for other countries.

The role involves building automated pipelines for legal-text collection, developing and validating measures such as restrictiveness indicators, citation-network complexity, amendment dynamics, and sectoral impact, and linking regulatory data with company-, patent-, and industry-level datasets. The longer-term agenda studies how regulation affects innovation outcomes such as patenting, market entry, R&D investment, and technology adoption.

Eligibility highlights: completed Master’s/Diploma in Business Administration, Economics, Data Science, Law, Computational Social Science, or a closely related field; strong quantitative and data-management skills; R and/or Stata plus SQL; web scraping/crawling experience is especially relevant; NLP and network analysis are welcome; excellent English (C1); and the dissertation agreement should be finalized within 12–18 months.

Funding and conditions: paid employment under the University of Vienna collective agreement, 30 hours/week, base gross salary EUR 3,776.10 (full-time equivalent), with possible increases for recognized experience. The contract starts on 2026-11-16, is initially limited to 1.5 years, and can extend to 4 years. The university also mentions flexible hours, partial remote work, conference travel support, data/computing resources, and internal training/coaching.

How to apply: submit a scientific CV, motivation letter, proof of completed Master’s/Diploma studies, and master transcript via the University of Vienna job portal. For questions, contact Stefan Wagner at [email protected].
