About this position
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan School of Management) is seeking a Pre-Doctoral Researcher / Technical Associate for the Industrial Performance Center (IPC) and the MIT Initiative for New Manufacturing (INM).
The position supports the New Manufacturing Research Project, with a focus on biomanufacturing, industrial policy, management, regional innovation, and economics. The researcher will study what enables high-growth companies in the biomanufacturing sector and what manufacturing models can help new categories of biomanufacturing products scale.
Work includes original research on the US biomanufacturing landscape, building research databases, conducting stakeholder interviews, reviewing scientific/technical/policy literature, drafting memos and reports, supporting research proposals, and contributing to workforce and regional-ecosystem analysis. The role is intended for someone planning to pursue a doctoral program in one to two years.
Eligibility highlights: bachelor’s degree in public policy, economics, urban/regional planning, science and technology policy, or a related field; at least 4 years of specialized research experience; and foundational training in life sciences, engineering, or quantitative science. Strong mixed-methods skills, writing ability, and experience with quantitative/econometric and qualitative methods are emphasized. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, familiarity with US industrial policy and manufacturing competitiveness, and proficiency in Stata, R, GIS, or related tools.

Bachelor’s degree in public policy, economics, urban or regional planning, science and technology policy, or a related field; at least 4 years of specialized experience with qualitative data analysis and research methods related to policy, industrial strategy, political economy, or a related domain; foundational training or a degree in life sciences, engineering, or a quantitative scientific field sufficient to engage with biomanufacturing; strong mixed-methods research skills including quantitative/econometric analysis and qualitative interviews; demonstrated experience producing written research for non-academic audiences; excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and manage multiple workstreams. Preferred: master’s degree in a related field, background spanning technical/scientific and policy/economics domains, familiarity with US industrial policy/manufacturing competitiveness/supply chains/technology adoption, experience with critical technologies or the bioeconomy, book-length or multi-author research production, research project management, proficiency in Stata/R and data or GIS tools, and sponsored research proposal support.
