About this position

MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen is offering a funded PhD position (Research Assistant, f/m/d) in organic and isotope geochemistry and paleontology within the ERC project “Deconvolving the early record of eukaryotic evolution”.

The project investigates the Neoproterozoic and early Palaeozoic, a pivotal interval in Earth history when eukaryotes became ecologically successful and animals emerged and diversified. Using molecular and isotope-based approaches, the PhD research will help deconvolve mixed sedimentary signals and reconstruct ancient ecosystems and carbon-cycle dynamics during major environmental perturbations.

The specific project focus is the rise and diversification of eukaryote-dominated ecosystems across the Neoproterozoic and early Palaeozoic. The doctoral researcher will study how primary producers and marine ecosystem functioning changed through time, and how these changes are preserved in biomarker, palaeontological, and stable carbon isotope records.

Main responsibilities include international fieldwork and sample collection, analysis of biomarker distributions and carbon isotope compositions in sedimentary rocks and individual fossils, analysis of fossil organic matter, integration of results with stratigraphic and environmental context, and preparation of scientific manuscripts and conference presentations.

Applicants should have a completed scientific university degree at master's level or equivalent in Earth sciences, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field. Candidates in the final phase of their master's degree may apply, but the master's certificate is required for employment. Excellent English, teamwork ability, and communication skills in an international research environment are expected. Experience in organic geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, or Precambrian research is advantageous.

The position is based at MARUM, an internationally recognised marine environmental research centre anchored at the University of Bremen. The post is paid according to German public sector pay scale TV-L 13 (75%) and is limited to four years, with an earliest start date as soon as possible and a latest end date of 31 July 2030.
