About this position

Imperial College London is advertising a Research Associate position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the South Kensington Campus in London, UK. This is a 12-month fixed-term post within the multi-partner project “Next-Gen Digestion”, funded by the Ofwat Water Breakthrough Challenge 5 (Transform Stream).

The role sits at the intersection of Environmental Science, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, and Chemical Engineering. The successful candidate will lead the computational and bioinformatic research arm of Imperial’s contribution, working with rich multi-omics datasets from full-scale wastewater treatment assets and developing predictive models for microbial hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion performance. The project aims to improve renewable energy generation and resource recovery from wastewater infrastructure.

You will work under the supervision of Dr Po-Heng (Henry) Lee and collaborate with a consortium including United Utilities, Jacobs UK, Severn Trent Water, Yorkshire Water, Anglian Water, Cranfield University, and Imperial College London. Research activities include bioinformatic analysis of 16S rRNA, metagenomics, or metatranscriptomics data; computational modelling; and advanced hybrid quantum-classical approaches using tools such as Python, R, Qiskit, and PennyLane.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Engineering, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Chemical Engineering, Quantum Information/Computing, or a closely related field. The advert also asks for strong knowledge of anaerobic digestion, microbial hydrolysis, or bioenergy recovery, plus excellent communication, collaboration, and a publication record appropriate to career stage.

Funding details: the post is fully salaried as a Research Associate, with a salary of £50,733–£59,484 per annum. Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD may be appointed as Research Assistant.

Deadline: 2026-10-21. Apply online through Imperial’s recruitment portal. If you have questions about the role, contact Dr Po-Heng Lee at [email protected]; application process queries should go to [email protected].
