About this position
Research Associate in Marine Biogeochemistry at Imperial College London, based at Silwood Park Campus (hybrid). This is a full-time, fixed-term research post for up to 2 years, funded by UKRI through Horizon Europe.
The role sits within the OceanSOS project, an interdisciplinary international consortium studying how seamounts and the currents they generate influence the biological carbon pump and marine carbon cycling. The successful candidate will work on marine biogeochemistry, ocean carbon science, microbial remineralisation, and the interaction between seafloor topology, particle flux, and deep-ocean ecosystems.
Key research activities include fieldwork at sea in the North Atlantic (Summer 2027) and facilitation of fieldwork south of South Africa (early Summer 2027). The post involves using sediment traps, marine snow catchers, and optodes to measure regional biological carbon pump processes and microbial remineralisation, then feeding results into physical, food-web, and statistical models.
Applicants should have strong fieldwork experience at sea, sample analysis experience related to the biological pump, sediment traps and/or microbial respiration, knowledge of organic carbon cycling in the ocean, and experience taking experiments from design and sampling through to data analysis and publication. Experience leading work at sea and analysing organic carbon samples is highly desirable.
This is a research-focused opportunity for someone interested in ocean biogeochemistry, deep-sea ecology, and carbon cycling. The post-holder will lead and co-author peer-reviewed publications, present findings at conferences, and collaborate with an international team of biogeochemists, physical ocean modellers, ecologists, and policy makers.
Deadline: 2026-11-30. Apply through the Imperial recruitment portal using the application link provided. Contact Emma Cavan at [email protected] for further information.
