About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia on climate change impacts on the Antarctic coastal ocean carbon sink, supervised by Dr Dorothee Bakker in the School of Environmental Sciences.

This project focuses on how rapid sea ice decline, glacial melt, and warming may alter ocean CO2 uptake in Ryder Bay and along the Antarctic Peninsula. The research combines marine carbonate chemistry, environmental chemistry, marine sciences, climate science, data analysis, and mathematical modelling.

You will extend a unique year-round carbonate chemistry time series, develop an idealised ocean-ice model, and investigate how changes in biological productivity and sea ice extent affect inorganic carbon cycling and the Antarctic coastal carbon sink. Data sources include the BAS RATS time series, SOCAT, satellite products, and reanalysis datasets.

Training includes chemical analysis, coding in Python or Matlab, data processing, visualisation, interpretation, and model development within UEA’s Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. You may also collaborate with the British Antarctic Survey, the National Oceanography Centre, and the POLOMINTS science team. Antarctic fieldwork is not required, though opportunities may arise.

Eligibility: applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent 2:1 bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, environmental sciences, physics, or a related subject, plus strong scientific motivation and numerical skills. An English language requirement is stated as IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component.

Funding: this is a competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Location: Norwich, United Kingdom.

Start date: 1 October 2027.

How to apply: register your interest on the FindAPhD project page and submit your enquiry details. The university will contact you directly.
