About this position

Research Associate in Vector Control Strategies at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus, on site only).

This is a full-time fixed-term research position in the Crisanti group focused on vector control, malaria control, CRISPR/Cas9 gene drive development, molecular biology, genetics, and mosquito population control. The project aims to build and improve self-sustaining gene drive systems by designing, building, and testing novel gene drives with improved nucleases, new genetic targets, and regulated expression in time and space.

The role is part of the Target Malaria consortium and involves independent and original research, teamwork in a large interdisciplinary group, publication writing, conference presentations, grant support, and quarterly reporting. The successful candidate will also supervise and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students and junior staff.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in molecular biology and genetics or a closely related discipline; significant experience with genetic approaches to disease-vector mosquito population control; hands-on CRISPR/Cas gene drive development and testing; strong publication record; laboratory and insectary experience; excellent organisation, communication, and problem-solving skills. Transcriptomic analysis, DNA sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis are highly desirable.

Funding: funded by the multidisciplinary research consortium Target Malaria. Salary is £50,733–£59,484 per annum.

Application deadline: 15 October 2026. Apply online through the Imperial recruitment portal. Contact Dr Federica Bernardini or Ms Clelia Supparo for further information.

What's required

A PhD in molecular biology and genetics, or a closely related discipline, is required. Applicants should have significant experience in a similar research environment working on genetic approaches to population control of disease-vector mosquitoes, particularly CRISPR/Cas9 gene drive development and testing. A strong publication record in relevant refereed journals is expected. Required skills include molecular biology methods, genome editing tools such as CRISPR/Cas, laboratory and insectary practices, experimental manipulation techniques, excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills, and the ability to lead small teams. Demonstrable experience supervising and training junior technical staff and students is also required. Transcriptomic analysis, DNA sequencing, molecular workflows, and bioinformatic analysis of genomic and gene expression data are highly desirable. Flexibility to support operational needs and occasional travel to collaborating sites is also expected.

How to apply

Apply online via the Imperial recruitment portal using the Apply now link. For further details, contact Dr Federica Bernardini or Ms Clelia Supparo by email. Submit early because the advert may close before the stated deadline if many applications are received.
