About this position

Research Fellow in Battery Materials and Interfaces at the University of Birmingham (College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Energy Materials Group).

This fixed-term, full-time research position is part of the EPSRC-funded FLOWCAT project, focused on the flow synthesis of lithium-rich cathodes. The successful candidate will work on continuous-flow co-precipitation for cathode precursor synthesis, then synthesize and characterize final cathode materials and prepare/test battery cells.

Research areas and keywords: battery materials, cathode precursors, continuous flow synthesis, co-precipitation, materials characterisation, electron microscopy, particle size analysis, tap density analysis, X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement, battery electrochemistry.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD or near completion/post-viva in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is required. The role also asks for strong analytical ability, clear communication, and prior experience with battery material synthesis, electrode manufacture, battery assembly, and electrochemical testing.

Funding and contract: salary £36,636–£46,049 (with progression up to £48,822), Grade 7, fixed term until March 2027.

Deadline: 16 October 2026.

How to apply: submit an application via the University of Birmingham careers portal. Informal enquiries can be sent to Dr Dominic Spencer-Jolly at [email protected].
