About this position

Research Fellow, Carbon Mineralization at the University of Melbourne (Carlton, Melbourne, Australia) is a fixed-term, full-time research role in the Faculty of Science, School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

The project focuses on ex situ carbon mineralization, combining hands-on DAC-MIN pilot plant experimentation with geochemical modelling to advance net zero technologies and practical carbon emissions reduction solutions. The successful candidate will design and run laboratory experiments, refine methods for cation leaching, impurity removal, and carbonate precipitation, and help operate and optimize the pilot plant.

This is a research fellow position rather than a student opening. It is suitable for candidates with a PhD in hydrogeochemistry, industrial chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field, or those near completion of a PhD. Experience in fluid-rock reactions, carbon mineralization, or water treatment is specifically highlighted, along with a strong publication record, laboratory/project management skills, and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.

The role includes co-supervising and mentoring graduate and PhD students, contributing to publications, conference presentations, competitive funding proposals, and industry partnerships. Salary is Level A AUD 87,266–118,416 p.a. plus 17% superannuation, with additional benefits including salary packaging, wellbeing support, professional development, and visa sponsorship for eligible international applicants.

Applications close on 19 November 2026 at 11:55 PM Melbourne time. Applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, and responses to the Selection Criteria via the University of Melbourne careers application process.
