About this position

Research Fellow in Integrated Photonics at Trinity College Dublin, based in the Department of Physics and linked to the Rinn Semiconductor programme.

This is a postdoctoral research fellow position in integrated photonics focused on environmental sensing. The successful candidate will help drive and coordinate the Rinn Semiconductor Sustainable Energy and Environment Theme, developing photonic solutions for distributed acoustic sensing for marine environments and photonic integrated chips for greenhouse gas sensing.

The role sits at the intersection of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), heterogeneous integration, waveguide routing constraints, transceiver-class packaging, and system-level optical/electronic integration. The fellow will work with theme lead PI, work-package PIs, postdoctoral researchers, and postgraduate students to define design rules, constraints, and coherent system-level decisions across the programme.

The appointee will be based at Trinity College Dublin and will have access to Rinn Semiconductor facilities in Tyndall, with regular travel/engagement expected. The wider Rinn Semiconductors initiative is described as part of a major Irish investment in advanced research, aiming to build a chiplet-based semiconductor design and integration ecosystem and strengthen collaboration across universities, institutions, and industry partners.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in Physics or a neighbouring discipline, a background in PIC platforms and heterogeneous integration, at least three years of postdoctoral experience, a strong publication record, evidence of project delivery, and the ability to contribute independently while also leading and coordinating research activity. Experience with PhD students is desirable. The role also values research funding capability, communication skills, stakeholder engagement, administrative responsibility, and interest in outreach and science education.
