About this position
Senior Research Fellow opportunity in the Infrastructure Materials Group at the Engineering Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) through the NIST Professional Research Experience (PREP) program.
The project focuses on evaluating the durability of additively constructed structures, with research centered on additive manufacturing, civil engineering, materials science, robotics, and mechanical testing. The selected researcher will help develop test methods, material standards, and design guidance for additively constructed elements using accelerated weathering, multi-scale mechanical testing, and non-destructive testing.
Research activities include print operations on a 7-axis multi-component mortar robot printer, PLC and sensor integration, characterization of cast and printed elements, microscopy sample preparation, literature review, and reporting results in meetings and technical documents. The role also contributes to NIST’s Additive Construction by Extrusion (ACE) Consortium, working with NIST staff and external partners on experimental research that may inform future codes and standards.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or higher in mechanical, civil, or materials engineering, or a related science field with emphasis on multi-scale structural testing; hands-on lab experience in mechanical characterization and related techniques; and eligibility for a Department of Commerce background check. Experience with R/Python, AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper, Ansys, or Abaqus is a plus.
