About this position

RIKEN is recruiting a Special Research Fellow in the Topological Properties Theory Research Team at the Center for Emergent Matter Science in Wako, Saitama, Japan. This is a postdoctoral-equivalent, fixed-term research position focused on topological condensed matter theory, topological phases, spintronics, and the quantum geometric properties of electron systems and metamaterials.

The team works on analytical and numerical theoretical research covering emergent physical phenomena in condensed matter and related systems. Current themes include topological insulators, topological semimetals, semiconductors, optical properties, atomic physics, magnetism, superconductivity, strongly correlated systems, chiral phonons, magnetoelectric multipoles, non-Hermitian systems, and metamaterials.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a doctoral degree in theoretical condensed matter physics, or expect to obtain one by the start date. The institute states that, in principle, it seeks candidates who earned their PhD within the last five years.

Funding: annual income starts at about 4 million yen, with salary based on experience, skills, and performance. The package includes discretionary work allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance, and social insurance.

Location: Wako Campus, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The position is for one person and starts as soon as possible after selection.

Deadline: applications are accepted from 2026-01-30 to 2027-01-30, and the search may close earlier once a suitable candidate is found.
