About this position

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Sustainable Materials Research Center (SusMat-RC) in Benguerir, Morocco. This postdoc sits within a multidisciplinary research environment focused on renewable bio-resources, advanced functional materials, and solutions that support a circular and green economy in Morocco and across Africa.

The project is centered on the development of bioinspired, circular-economy-driven biobased functional materials for sustainable agriculture. The research emphasis includes water–soil interfaces, water retention, fertilizer and nutrient-controlled release, and soil hydration using multi-source biomass feedstocks. The role is well suited to a researcher with a strong background in polymeric and biomaterial systems and an interest in agricultural and environmental applications under arid and semi-arid conditions.

The successful candidate will design, formulate, and characterize biobased materials such as hydrogels, polymers, and composites for agricultural use. Additional responsibilities include developing and optimizing nutrient encapsulation and controlled-release protocols, investigating water-use efficiency and soil moisture dynamics, and applying a broad set of analytical and microscopy techniques such as FTIR, UV–Vis, XRD, DLS, SEM–EDS, TEM, and TGA/DSC. The postdoc will also collaborate within an interdisciplinary team, maintain detailed research records, prepare manuscripts, present findings at conferences, contribute to proposals, and assist with the supervision of master's and doctoral students.

Applicants should hold a recently awarded Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong hands-on experience in polymer/hydrogel synthesis, biopolymer modification, water-retentive formulations, and material characterization is expected. A background or strong interest in sustainable agriculture, controlled-release systems, soil science interfaces, or water management in water-limited environments will be advantageous. Excellent English communication skills, strong organization, independent research ability, and a solid publication record are important.

To apply, candidates must submit a single PDF file containing an updated CV, a one-page cover letter explaining the fit between their research background and the project as well as their motivation for joining SusMat-RC, and contact information for two professional referees. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, and early application is encouraged.
