About this position

The University of Iowa’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology is recruiting a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Bacteriology within the Carver College of Medicine.

This faculty opening is aimed at researchers working in bacteriology, microbiology, immunology, host-pathogen interactions, and related areas such as bacterial pathogenesis, bacterial gene regulation and stress responses, bacterial cell biology, bacterial behaviors, antimicrobial resistance, and bacterial adaptation in eukaryotic hosts or complex polymicrobial communities.

The position includes a 12-month appointment, fringe benefits, a competitive start-up package, office and laboratory space, and access to state-of-the-art core facilities, instrumentation, and BSL3 and animal BSL3 space. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain an extramurally funded research program and contribute to teaching in the department, with possible teaching in bacterial genetics, bacterial physiology, or bacterial pathogenesis.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D., postdoctoral experience, and a strong record of research accomplishments. Associate Professor candidates must already have an established and funded research program and demonstrated ability to mentor and teach Ph.D. graduate students.

Review of applications begins mid-August 2026 and continues until the position is filled. The online application requires a CV, letter of interest, a 2–3 page statement of research interests, and a 1-page teaching statement. Selected candidates will later be asked to provide three letters of recommendation.
