About this position

Three fully funded PhD positions are available in the ML-GUIDE project on ML-guided directed evolution, combining deep learning, next-generation sequencing, synthetic chemistry, synthetic biology, and biomolecule engineering to accelerate the discovery of better (bio)catalysts and drugs.

The positions are hosted at the University of Groningen and the Technical University of Eindhoven (Netherlands), with candidates embedded in one of three research groups: the Artificial Organic Chemistry Lab (Dr. Robert Pollice), the Molecular Machine Learning Group (Prof. Francesca Grisoni), or the Molecular Evolution Group (Prof. Clemens Mayer). Research topics include peptide catalysts for C-C bond-forming reactions, cyclic-peptide drug design, and machine-learning-guided biocatalyst evolution.

This is a 4-year PhD opportunity with a salary of €3,204–€4,051 gross per month for full-time employment, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The post specifies an MSc (or equivalent) in (Bio)chemistry, Biotechnology, Computational Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry/Biology, or a related field. Experience in directed evolution, molecular machine learning, next-generation sequencing, or synthetic chemistry is preferred.

Deadline: 15 October 2026, 23:59 Dutch local time.

How to apply: Submit your application online with a motivation letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, and two academic references. The vacancy page is the application portal.
