About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, supervised by Dr Dong-Yang Wang, investigates the use of photonic quasicrystals to build higher-dimensional topological phases. The research encompasses mathematical framework development, photonic quasicrystal design, energy band calculation, sample fabrication, and experimental characterization. Topological photonics is an emerging field that embeds topological invariants in optical materials, enabling robust light propagation protected by topology. These materials are crucial for advancing future photonic technologies.

Quasicrystals, which exist between crystalline solids and amorphous materials, possess unique symmetry characteristics that facilitate novel topological state engineering. The project will focus on theoretical calculations, numerical simulations, and essential experimental and cleanroom fabrication activities. The School of Optoelectronics (ORC) at Southampton is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, as demonstrated by its Athena SWAN award. The university offers generous maternity policies, onsite childcare, and a range of benefits to support employee well-being and work-life balance.

Applicants should have a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent, with a strong background and research interest in physics and mathematics. Funding opportunities are available for both UK and international students, including Horizon Europe fee waivers, competition-based Presidential Bursaries, and studentships that typically cover tuition fees and a stipend for living costs. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.

To apply, select programme type (Research), 2026/27, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, search for programme PhD ORC (7097), and add the supervisor's name in section 2 of the application. Applications should include a research proposal, CV, two academic references, degree transcripts and certificates, and English language qualification if applicable. For general questions, contact [email protected] or reach out to Dr Dong-Yang Wang at [email protected]. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.
