About this position
The University of Copenhagen’s Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, is advertising two postdoctoral positions in Ethnology linked to the project Tolerating Urban Animals. Techno-moral perspectives on killing and caring for other species. The project is based at the Centre for Sustainable Futures and examines how technologies, law, and moral reasoning shape the management of undomesticated and feral urban animals in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.
These postdoc positions are ideal for researchers with interests in ethnology, anthropology, history, science and technology studies, more-than-human studies, urban animals, ethnographic fieldwork, and archival research. One project frame focuses on technologies for caring, including how municipalities, residents, and NGOs use technologies to attract and sustain animal presence. The other frame focuses on changing technologies, tracing successful and unsuccessful techno-fixes and shifts in legislation and moral attitudes over time.
Applicants must propose a concrete project based on 6–9 months of ethnographic fieldwork or substantial archival research, and should specify Scandinavian contexts, time period, actors, and field sites. Projects with emphasis on Sweden or Norway are prioritized. The project already includes case studies on rats and wolves, so those are not prioritized.
The positions are fixed-term for three years and start on 1 February 2027. Salary begins at DKK 39,900 plus pension contribution. Funding comes from the Carlsberg Foundation’s Semper Ardens Accomplish programme.
Applicants should have a PhD-level qualification, fluency in a Scandinavian language, and experience with historical and ethnographic fieldwork. Public dissemination experience, such as podcasting, is considered an advantage.
To apply, submit the required documents online via the University of Copenhagen job portal before the deadline. Required materials include a motivation letter, project proposal(s), CV, PhD diploma and other qualification documents, publication list, and up to three selected publications.
Deadline: 20 October 2026, 23:59 CET.
