At the University of Graz, the Institute for Theoretical and Applied Translation Studies is offering a Universitätsassistent:in mit Doktorat (m/w/d) position in the research area “Translation, Migration, Minorities”. The role is based in Graz, Austria, and combines research, publication, teaching, academic service, and knowledge transfer in socially relevant contexts.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a trans- and interdisciplinary research group on “Multilingual Communication and Translation in Crisis and Disaster Contexts” within the institute’s broader thematic focus. The position also offers the opportunity to work toward a habilitation linked to the research profile, as well as to help develop new methods and formats for critical and engaged interpreting research.

Responsibilities include independent teaching and examinations in the BA curriculum (multilingualism, translation and digital communication) and the MA curriculum (translation studies), with particular emphasis on translation, multilingualism, migration, and interpreting. The post also involves supervision of students, including BA theses and, where needed, MA theses, as well as participation in institutional organization, administration, and evaluation activities.

The job is strongly research-oriented and includes support for third-party funding applications, organization and co-organization of workshops, conferences, and academic events, and contributions to the strengthening of interdisciplinary and practice-oriented teaching. Applicants should be prepared to engage with pedagogy, politics, and ethics in interpreting, and to take an active role in collaborative academic work.

Eligibility requires a doctorate in translation studies, interpreting studies, or another relevant field, with a dissertation on a topic relevant to the post. The profile asks for excellent knowledge of translation and interpreting theory, solid grounding in social-science theory and research methods, experience in research and teaching, and very good German and English, plus another language. Strong IT skills, intercultural competence, teamwork, initiative, and flexibility are also expected.

The position is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 6 years with a minimum gross annual salary of €70,200.20 (full-time, B1 with doctorate). The intended start date is 2026-10-01. Applications are due by 2026-08-28.
