About this position
ViCAS (Vienna Centre for Advanced Studies) at the University of Vienna is calling for fully funded fellowship positions for the 2027–2028 cycle. The call is open to international scholars from all academic disciplines with an outstanding academic record and a strong interest in interdisciplinary engagement.
The programme offers two fellowship tracks: Mid-Career Fellowships for researchers whose doctoral degree was awarded at least three years before the deadline and who have already developed an independent research profile; and Advanced Fellowships for researchers whose doctoral degree was awarded at least eight years before the deadline and who have an established record of research excellence and academic leadership.
ViCAS hosts around 30 fellows each academic year across three residency options: a full residency (9 months, 1 Oct 2027–30 Jun 2028), a fall residency (4 months, 1 Oct 2027–31 Jan 2028), or a spring residency (4 months, 1 Mar 2028–30 Jun 2028). Fellows are expected to be present on site and participate actively in ViCAS activities.
Eligibility highlights include: a doctoral degree meeting the relevant age threshold, an excellent research record, an independent profile or leadership experience depending on track, and endorsement from a professor at the University of Vienna. The post also notes that applicants must have no prior affiliation with Austrian institutions within the past five years.
Applications must be submitted electronically in English via a University of Vienna u:account. The deadline is Friday, 28 August 2026, at 14:00 Vienna time (CEST). Applicants are advised to read the Application Guidelines and Q&A carefully and to secure faculty support before final submission.
