Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) invites applications for a PhD position within the TRUST project, focusing on "AI in Professional Conduct." This interdisciplinary opportunity is based at the Centre for the Study of Professions (SPS) and is funded by the Research Council of Norway as part of The Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI (TRUST). The project investigates how artificial intelligence reshapes practices, norms, and accountability across professional domains, with a strong emphasis on real-world consequences and interdisciplinary evaluation. Applicants are encouraged to propose a PhD project in one of two case areas: (1) generative AI in research (covering epistemological aspects, authorship, peer review, deskilling, and research ethics), or (2) AI tools in health professions (addressing clinical decision-making, professional responsibility, trust, and patient–provider relations). The project welcomes empirical, analytical, normative, and mixed-methods approaches, and expects the candidate to contribute actively to comparative and integrative ambitions within the overarching research group. TRUST is a leading Norwegian research centre dedicated to advancing trustworthy AI, uniting expertise from machine learning, statistics, mathematics, data science, law, social sciences, and philosophy. The centre’s mission is to develop AI systems that are accurate, interpretable, inclusive, fair, safe, sustainable, and well-governed. With over 70 partners from academia, industry, government, and civil society, TRUST’s research is tested in real-world contexts such as healthcare, mobility, governance, security, and climate resilience. SPS is a prominent research and doctoral training environment in the Nordic region, conducting interdisciplinary studies on professions using qualitative, quantitative, historical, and philosophical approaches. The centre is characterized by theoretical and methodological diversity, with more than 50 affiliates, including a large PhD community. The position offers academic development in creative research environments, close integration into an active research group, opportunities for research stays abroad, and a strong doctoral programme with excellent supervision. The starting salary is NOK 550,800 per year, with additional benefits including loan and pension schemes, flexible working hours, and strong welfare provisions. Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree (120 ECTS or equivalent) with a grade of B or better on the master’s thesis, demonstrate excellent oral and written English skills, and have functional proficiency in a Scandinavian language. The PhD candidate must be based at SPS during the fellowship period and gain admission to the PhD programme in the Study of Professions prior to commencement. Personal suitability, strong interest in research, interdisciplinarity, societal implications of AI, analytical abilities, communication skills, independence, creativity, and collaborative skills are highly valued.
