PhD on Numerical Modelling of Subsurface Erosion in Dikes and Geothermal Wells

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) offers an exciting opportunity to advance the understanding of subsurface erosion processes that threaten dike stability and geothermal well integrity. The project focuses on numerical modelling using advanced finite element methods (FEM) to simulate internal erosion mechanisms, such as sand production in geothermal boreholes and backward erosion piping in dikes. These phenomena, often invisible until catastrophic failure occurs, pose significant risks to buried infrastructure and energy systems. As a PhD candidate, you will develop and extend coupled hydro-mechanical erosion models, calibrating them through laboratory experiments at various scales. The research aims to investigate the effects of soil properties, flow paths, and scale, ultimately producing practical prediction tools for engineering applications. You will be embedded within the BEHeaT program on subsurface heat extraction, part of the Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES), and collaborate across the Built Environment and Mechanical Engineering departments. This interdisciplinary approach supports TU/e’s energy transition and climate resilience goals. The project is supervised by Prof.dr. A.S.J. Suiker, Full Professor in Applied Mechanics, and you will join a supportive, inclusive, and multidisciplinary team. The university provides a dynamic research environment, high-quality training programs, and opportunities for professional growth. TU/e is located in Brainport Eindhoven, a world-leading tech region known for innovation in AI, photonics, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing. Employment conditions include a four-year full-time contract, competitive salary (scale P: €3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid leave, allowances for commuting and home-working, unlimited access to sports facilities, and support for international candidates (including the 30% tax facility). You will spend 10–15% of your time on teaching tasks and benefit from excellent technical infrastructure and campus amenities. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (specializing in Applied or Computational Mechanics), a research-oriented attitude, fluency in English (C1 level), and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams. Motivation to develop teaching skills and collaborate with academic and industrial partners is essential. To apply, submit your application online via the provided link. Include a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact information for three references. Only complete applications will be considered. The vacancy remains open until filled, with a deadline of May 31, 2026. For further information, contact Prof.dr. A.S.J. Suiker ([email protected]) or Scott Jacops, HR Advisor ([email protected]). Join TU/e and contribute to safeguarding infrastructure, improving geothermal energy systems, and enhancing flood protection strategies for a sustainable future.
