PhD and Postdoc Positions in Probabilistic Turbulence Models and Scientific Computing

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is advertising PhD and postdoctoral openings in the Scientific Computing research group for the ERC Consolidator project SYMBIOSIS , led by Benjamin Sanderse (Head of the Scientific Computing group). The project focuses on probabilistic turbulence models and combines model reduction , stochastic modelling , data assimilation , generative machine learning , uncertainty quantification , and partial differential equations for entropy-stable simulations of fluid flow. The research is motivated by applications such as wind-turbine wakes , CO2 transport , wind farms, industrial processes, and weather/climate modelling. Depending on background, the work may lean more toward stochastic fundamentals, generative machine learning, or data assimilation. The PhD candidate will be based at CWI and obtain the degree at Eindhoven University of Technology ; the postdoc will also be based at CWI with close collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology and other knowledge institutes. PhD requirements: completed MSc in applied mathematics, physics, or a related discipline; strong expertise in at least one of numerical analysis, stochastic methods, generative machine learning, computational fluid dynamics, or data assimilation; strong mathematical background preferred; good programming skills (Python/Julia); proven research talent; strong academic writing and presentation skills; team-oriented; excellent English. Postdoc requirements: completed PhD in applied mathematics, physics, or a related discipline; strong expertise in at least one of the same technical areas; strong mathematical background preferred; good programming skills (Python/Julia); proven independence in research; strong academic writing and presentation skills; team-oriented; willingness to help supervise PhD candidates; excellent English. Funding and conditions: The PhD is initially for 18 months and can be extended by 30 months after positive evaluation, with salary rising from €3,115 to €3,989 gross per month over four years, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The postdoc is a 2-year appointment with salary between €4,725 and €5,758 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. CWI mentions flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees. Deadline: 2026-08-31. Applications received before the deadline are given full consideration. How to apply: Use the application portal on the vacancy page and upload the requested documents. PhD applicants should submit a CV, course list and grades, Master thesis, motivation letter, and at least two references. Postdoc applicants should submit a CV, course list and grades, Master and PhD theses, two relevant articles, motivation letter, and at least two references.
