PhD in Socioeconomic Impact of Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) in Malaysia

This PhD project at Monash University Malaysia investigates the socioeconomic burden of Disorders of Gut–Brain Interaction (DGBI), with a particular focus on healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and productivity loss in conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Functional Dyspepsia (FD), and Functional Constipation (FC). The research employs a dual-method approach, combining retrospective cohort analysis of HRU data from medical records with a cross-sectional survey to capture the impact of DGBI on work productivity and quality of life (QoL). By integrating real-world clinical evidence with patient-reported outcomes, the project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the economic and QoL impact of DGBI on individuals and the healthcare system. The project is supervised by Dr Siew Li Teoh (main supervisor), with co-supervision from Prof Shaun Lee, Dr Ruth Sim, Prof Zanfina Ademi Delaney, Assoc Prof Kia Fatt Quek, and Assoc Prof Chun Wie Chong, all based in the Department of Pharmacy. The research areas include epidemiology, pharmacy, physiology, and health informatics, offering a multidisciplinary environment for the candidate. Successful applicants will be awarded the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which provides a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years and 6 months. To be eligible, candidates must hold a First Class Honours (H1) degree or its equivalent (H1E) recognized by Monash University Malaysia and meet the English language requirements. The scholarship is open until filled, with interviews likely to take place in October 2025. Starting May 2026, the application process will change, and updated instructions will be available on the project page. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the main supervisor with their academic background and achievements to assess suitability for the project. If a good fit is determined, applicants should complete an Expression of Interest (EoI) form, including a research proposal relevant to the project. Eligible candidates will be invited to apply for PhD candidature and may be selected for a scholarship interview. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in the intersection of medical science, pharmacy, and public health, and who wish to contribute to impactful research on the socioeconomic implications of gut-brain disorders in Malaysia.

PhD: The Socioeconomic Impact of Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) in Malaysia

This PhD project at Monash University Malaysia investigates the socioeconomic impact of Disorders of Gut–Brain Interaction (DGBI), including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Functional Dyspepsia (FD), and Functional Constipation (FC). The research aims to quantify healthcare resource utilization and productivity loss associated with these conditions, providing a comprehensive assessment of their burden on individuals and the Malaysian healthcare system. The project employs a dual-method approach: a retrospective cohort analysis of medical records to evaluate healthcare resource utilization, and a cross-sectional survey to capture patient-reported outcomes related to work productivity and quality of life. By integrating real-world clinical evidence with survey data, the study will offer valuable insights into the economic and quality of life consequences of DGBI. Supervision is provided by a multidisciplinary team: Dr Siew Li Teoh (main supervisor), Prof Shaun Lee, Dr Ruth Sim, Prof Zanfina Delaney, Assoc Prof Kia Fatt Quek, and Assoc Prof Chun Wie Chong. The research is based in the Department of Pharmacy, Monash University Malaysia, and is supported by the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which offers a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months. Applicants must hold a First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent qualification recognised by Monash University Malaysia and meet English language requirements. The project is suitable for candidates with backgrounds in pharmacy, medical science, public health, or related fields. Applications are accepted year-round. To apply, prospective students should first contact the main supervisor with their academic background and achievements to determine suitability. If a good fit, applications should be submitted via the provided link, referencing the research topic as advertised. Further details on application requirements and scholarships are available in the submission guide.
