About this position
This PhD project at Monash University Malaysia investigates the socioeconomic impact of Disorders of Gut–Brain Interaction (DGBI), including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Functional Dyspepsia (FD), and Functional Constipation (FC). The research aims to quantify healthcare resource utilization and productivity loss associated with these conditions, providing a comprehensive assessment of their burden on individuals and the Malaysian healthcare system.
The project employs a dual-method approach: a retrospective cohort analysis of medical records to evaluate healthcare resource utilization, and a cross-sectional survey to capture patient-reported outcomes related to work productivity and quality of life. By integrating real-world clinical evidence with survey data, the study will offer valuable insights into the economic and quality of life consequences of DGBI.
Supervision is provided by a multidisciplinary team: Dr Siew Li Teoh (main supervisor), Prof Shaun Lee, Dr Ruth Sim, Prof Zanfina Delaney, Assoc Prof Kia Fatt Quek, and Assoc Prof Chun Wie Chong. The research is based in the Department of Pharmacy, Monash University Malaysia, and is supported by the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which offers a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months.
Applicants must hold a First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent qualification recognised by Monash University Malaysia and meet English language requirements. The project is suitable for candidates with backgrounds in pharmacy, medical science, public health, or related fields. Applications are accepted year-round.
