Fully funded PhD positions are available at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) for the ERC-funded S-OIL project, led by Daniel Chavez. The project examines oil, the state, energy transition, decarbonisation, national oil companies (NOCs) , and the politics of fossil-fuel decline across the Global South . Successful candidates will conduct in-depth fieldwork in Africa, Asia, and Latin America , and will be supported with a salary, funded research stays at partner institutions, and substantial fieldwork funding. The project is especially interested in researchers from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean . Preferred academic backgrounds include political economy, development studies, anthropology, geography , or related disciplines. The project seeks applicants interested in the politics of fossil fuels and the state, especially those who want to move beyond technocratic and market-driven framings of decarbonisation.
