PhD position: Trait-based drivers of global plant distributions at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. This PhD project sits in spatial ecology , species distributions , plant functional traits , and global plant biodiversity . The research asks how functional traits shape broad patterns of plant diversity and plant responses to environmental change across multiple levels of biological organisation, from major plant strategies (tree, epiphyte, shrub) to inter-specific and intra-specific variation. You will work with large trait and biodiversity datasets such as TRY and BIEN , collate plant distribution and environmental data, and set up and run a greenhouse experiment to study phenotypic plasticity under simulated environmental conditions. The role also includes publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, and mentoring BSc/MSc students. The position is embedded in the Plant Ecology and Nature Conservation group . Supervision is by Dr. Coline Boonman and Dr. Amanda Taylor , with Prof. David Kleijn as promotor. Eligibility highlights: an MSc in ecology, environmental sciences, or a related field; experience with large biodiversity and environmental datasets; strong R and quantitative/statistical skills; excellent English communication; ability to work independently and collaboratively; C1-level English expected. Funding: this is a fully funded PhD position with salary from €3,204 per month in year 1 to €4,051 per month in year 4, plus standard WUR employment benefits. Deadline: 25 October 2026 .
