PhD: Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos

PhD opportunity at the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, focused on the connection between ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and high-energy neutrinos. The project sits at the interface of astroparticle physics, particle physics, astronomy, and computational analysis, and is embedded in both the Cosmic Ray group and the KM3NeT group at Nikhef. The project also highlights the potential use of machine-learning methods to improve the sensitivity of the analysis. The successful candidate will become a full member of both the Pierre Auger Collaboration and the KM3NeT Collaboration, gaining access to both datasets and working closely with the relevant experimental teams. The position is based in Amsterdam, with regular in-person participation expected in cosmic-ray group meetings in Nijmegen at least every other week. Nikhef offers an open, international, and supportive research environment with strong computing and technical infrastructure. Funding is provided through employment by the NWO-I foundation for a period of 1+3 years, with a competitive salary and additional salary payments in May and December. Applicants should have an MSc degree in (astro-)particle physics or a closely related field by the time they start, and strong software/programming skills, especially in Python, are encouraged.
