. The research goal is to build new mathematical foundations for learned operators so they can be used reliably in simulation, digital twins, optimization, and control of complex engineering systems. You will study how operator-learning models represent dynamical systems, when they admit equivalent state-space representations, and how key system-theoretic properties such as stability, contraction, dissipativity, and robustness can be defined and guaranteed directly in the operator domain.
The position is embedded in the
Dynamics and Control group
in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU/e. The project will combine analytical theory, numerical implementation, and validation in industrially relevant applications across the
high-tech, medical, and energy
sectors. The work is deliberately broad and not tied to one machine-learning architecture: the aim is to develop principles that apply to current and future deep operator models.
Research topics include feedforward, feedback, and predictive controller design for systems represented by learned operators, as well as theoretical questions on robustness and operator-theoretic modeling. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with opportunities to interact with academic and industrial partners, and will be part of a group of about 35 researchers working in dynamical systems and control.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or equivalent in Systems and Control, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field; strong analytical and mathematical skills; interest in machine learning and AI; ability to combine theory with numerical work; and fluent English at C1 level.
Employment conditions include a
four-year, full-time PhD appointment
with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The salary is on
Dutch university scale P
