PhD in Impact of Shock Events on the Reliability of Electric Power Conversion Systems

The Eindhoven University of Technology invites applications for a PhD position focused on the impact of shock events on the reliability of electric power conversion systems. As renewable energy sources and electrified loads become increasingly prevalent in medium-voltage power grids, modular circuit architectures are essential for MV-connected converter applications. These systems, comprising power transformers, electronic converters, protection systems, filters, and compensation circuits, are vital for achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. However, their long-term social and environmental impacts, particularly regarding electrical and electronic waste, require further study. This PhD project aims to systematically identify, model, and quantify the effects of shock events on the reliability of electric power conversion systems. The research will develop assessment methodologies to enhance compatibility with circular economy strategies, supporting decisions on reuse, remanufacturing, and repurposing. Key tasks include identifying the nature and frequency of shock events, investigating their effects using physics-based approaches (analytical and experimental), developing models for lifetime prediction that integrate normal operation and shock events, and designing circuit topologies for fault containment and sensing systems. The Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, part of the Department of Electrical Engineering, is the main center for research in electromechanical power conversion and power electronics in the Netherlands. The group’s research aligns with strategic themes of Energy, Health, and Smart Mobility, and includes tracks in high-tech motion systems, power electronics, smart mobility, and advanced modeling. The department is committed to a ‘Smart Sustainable Society’ and collaborates closely with high-tech industries in the Brainport Eindhoven region. Applicants must have an MSc in Electrical and/or Power Engineering, strong analytical and mathematical skills, hands-on experience with power electronics and electromechanical systems, and excellent scientific writing abilities. Fluency in English (C1) is required. The position offers full-time employment for four years, with a competitive salary (€3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, parental leave, commuting and home working allowance, sports center access, and a tax compensation scheme for international candidates. Teaching tasks will comprise 10–15% of employment. To apply, submit your application online via the provided link, including a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact information for three references. Only complete applications will be considered. The vacancy remains open until filled, with a deadline of April 30, 2026. For further information, contact Francesca Grazian or Calina Ciuhu, assistant professors in the EPE group, or HR Services EE. Pre-employment screening may apply. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in advancing the reliability and sustainability of electric power conversion systems within a leading international university and a vibrant tech region.
