Institut Pasteur

Postdoctoral Researcher in Bacterial Genomics and Phylogenomics of Salmonella Typhi

Institut Pasteur, Paris, is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a 2–3 year project in bacterial genomics , phylogenomics , population genomics , and bioinformatics . The work is led by François-Xavier Weill at the Enteric Bacterial Pathogens unit, a group closely linked to public health and reference activities for enteric bacterial pathogens. The project focuses on the historical evolution of Salmonella Typhi , the causative agent of typhoid fever. The successful candidate will analyse a unique dataset of more than 500 historical S. Typhi genomes already sequenced from isolates collected worldwide between 1950 and 1980 . Each isolate also has its original Vi phage type , creating a rare opportunity to connect whole-genome sequencing with decades of historical global surveillance data. The research goal is to reconstruct the lost diversity of S. Typhi and translate historical phage-typing records into a modern genomic framework. This should provide new insights into the evolution and global spread of an important human pathogen. The post is especially suitable for someone interested in microbial evolution, pathogen genomics, and large-scale genomic analysis. Eligibility highlights: experience in bacterial genomics, phylogenomics, population genomics, or bioinformatics; motivation to work on fundamental questions in microbial evolution; comfort with large genomic datasets. The host laboratory is located within a controlled-access area, and appointment is subject to a favourable security vetting process. Funding and duration: the position is a postdoctoral appointment for 2–3 years . No salary or stipend amount is stated in the post. How to apply: use the application details link provided in the post and follow the instructions on the application page. Review the group information and recent publications if you want to tailor your application to the lab’s research themes. Institution: Institut Pasteur, Paris, France.
