PhD Researcher in Developmental and School Psychology with Teaching Responsibilities
The School Psychology and Development in Context research unit at KU Leuven investigates developmental processes and influencing factors from early childhood to late adulthood, with a special focus on the role of social contexts such as schools, families, and peer systems. The unit comprises a vibrant team of professors, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, research staff, and teaching assistants, fostering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment.
This PhD position, supervised by Professor Jantine Spilt and Professor Hilde Colpin, centers on the psychosocial development of children and adolescents within the school context. The research explores how teacher-student relationships and peer relationships impact young people's behavior and well-being, examining both positive outcomes (like prosocial behavior) and challenges (such as aggressive behavior and low well-being). The programme investigates the unique and combined influences of these relationships, including mechanisms underlying closeness, conflict, acceptance, rejection, victimisation, and friendships at both individual and classroom levels. Candidates will have the opportunity to refine their research topics in consultation with supervisors, utilizing existing longitudinal data from early adolescence and potentially designing new studies.
As a member of the assistant academic staff (AAP), you will dedicate two-thirds of your time to doctoral research and one-third to teaching. Teaching responsibilities include delivering practical sessions for courses in Developmental Psychology and Psychodiagnostics to bachelor’s students in Psychology and Educational Sciences, supervising students during practicals, preparing and grading assignments and exams, and contributing to the development of the teaching curriculum. Supervising master’s theses is also part of the role.
KU Leuven offers a full-time appointment for up to six years (initial two-year contract, renewable twice upon positive evaluation), with a salary according to Assistant salary scale 43. The university provides a supportive and dynamic working environment, opportunities for professional growth, collaboration with other researchers, and access to doctoral training, workshops, seminars, and conferences. Teaching support includes induction, peer consultation, and participation in motivated teaching teams. Additional opportunities include valorisation activities such as lectures or training sessions within Praxis P, the faculty’s practice center.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Psychology or Educational Sciences, with knowledge of developmental psychology and psychodiagnostics. Master’s students graduating in September 2026 are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have excellent academic results, strong communication skills, proficiency in statistical techniques (or willingness to learn), ability to teach in Dutch and English, and strong organisational and didactic skills. Interest in the development of young people in school contexts and teaching bachelor’s students is essential.
The intended start date is 1 October 2026. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds. For accessibility or support questions, contact the provided email addresses.
