Hinrich Schulenburg

Postdoc opportunity at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel in the Evolutionary Ecology and Genetics group led by Prof. Dr. Hinrich Schulenburg . This 5-year postdoctoral position is part of the ERC project CrypticBenefits and focuses on the evolution of antimicrobial heteroresistance and broader phenotypic heterogeneity in bacteria. The model organism is the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa . The research combines evolution experiments , whole-genome sequence analysis , bacterial genetics , and functional analysis , making it a strong fit for candidates interested in experimental evolution, microbial adaptation, and data-driven analysis of antimicrobial resistance evolution. The postdoc is based in the Schulenburg group in Kiel, Germany, and the team’s publications on AMR evolution are highlighted on the group website. The position starts on 1 January 2027 and is advertised as a full-time temporary appointment (38.7 hours per week). Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a PhD in evolutionary biology (or equivalent), strong knowledge of evolutionary biology concepts, research experience in microbial evolution, and skills in statistics and bioinformatics. English at C1 level is required. Useful additional experience includes designing and running evolution experiments, high-throughput methods, genome analysis, genetic manipulation of microorganisms, advanced statistical modelling (e.g., GLMs, multivariate statistics), and programming in Python or R . Application materials: submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter (max. 2 pages, Arial 11, line spacing 1.15), a CV, and your PhD certificate. In the motivation letter, explain how your background matches the profile and how your research interests align with the group’s focus. Deadline: 27 August 2026, 22:00 (Europe/Berlin).
