PhD in Functional Reliability and Interface Dynamics in Emerging Transistor Devices

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), School of Advanced Technology, is advertising a funded PhD project on Functional Reliability and Interface Dynamics in Emerging Transistor Devices . The project sits at the intersection of electrical engineering , materials science , physics , computer science , and artificial intelligence . It focuses on synaptic transistors and resistive random-access memory (RRAM) for neuromorphic hardware, with research covering fabrication, characterisation, and optimisation of individual devices and arrays. Key topics include materials, interfaces, device structures, pulse programming schemes, synaptic plasticity, weight-update linearity and symmetry, retention, endurance, energy consumption, device uniformity, and the impact of interface and defect dynamics on reliability. The project aims to move beyond proof-of-concept demonstrations and establish whether these devices can operate in a stable, controllable, and scalable way for edge intelligence, embodied AI, and autonomous systems. Experimental work will be combined with analysis of device data to evaluate how device characteristics affect the accuracy, robustness, and energy efficiency of neuromorphic computing. This is a funded PhD studentship for three years. The award covers tuition fees and includes conference support up to RMB 16,500. The majority of research will be carried out at XJTLU in Suzhou, China , with a possible short-term research visit to the University of Liverpool if needed. Eligibility highlights include a Master's degree with Merit and a Bachelor's degree with first-class or upper second-class honours, or in exceptional cases a strong Bachelor's-only profile in certain disciplines. Applicants must demonstrate good spoken and written English; IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required for non-native English speakers. To apply, email the principal supervisor with the project title in the subject line and include a CV, two reference letters, a personal statement, English language certificates, transcripts, verified education certificates, and a dissertation/writing sample if available.
