The project focuses on using
human brain organoids
as a living, adaptive computing substrate. The successful candidate will build a
reservoir computing
platform in which a human iPSC-derived brain organoid acts as the physical reservoir. Time-dependent inputs will be delivered as spatiotemporal electrical stimulation through a
high-density multielectrode array (MEA)
, and the resulting nonlinear network dynamics will be analyzed for computational tasks.
This is a highly interdisciplinary PhD combining
neuroscience

. The work includes organoid generation and long-term maintenance, MEA-based stimulation and recording, closed-loop training protocols, and analysis of activity-dependent plasticity, functional connectivity, learning, and memory in human neural tissue.
Eligibility highlights:
Master’s degree or equivalent in neuroscience, bioengineering, biology, biophysics, or a closely related field; hands-on MEA experience is required; strong background in neurobiology is preferred; experience with human stem cell biology and organoids is a strong advantage; Python or MATLAB and interest in machine learning/reservoir computing are welcome; B2-level language proficiency in the language of the thesis is required.
Funding:
fixed-term full-time doctoral contract for 24 months. The annual gross salary is EUR 43,445.
