PhD Student Position: New Concepts and Materials in Catalysis
The Erlangen Center for Interface Research and Catalysis (ECRC) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen–Nürnberg (FAU) is offering a PhD student position in the Libuda Group, focusing on new concepts and materials in catalysis. The research will center on in situ and operando studies of real and model catalysts, aiming to unravel highly selective (de)functionalization reactions. The project will investigate the role of catalytic modifiers, additives, and activation procedures to establish structure-property relationships, using advanced experimental techniques.
Key methodologies include in situ and operando infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS, PM-IRAS), with additional microscopy methods such as scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy employed where appropriate. The successful candidate will design and execute experiments, analyze measurements, develop robust data-analysis workflows, collaborate within an interdisciplinary team, present results at conferences, and contribute to manuscripts and student mentoring.
The ECRC provides a vibrant, international research environment with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and instrumentation, close interaction with leading synchrotron facilities, and excellent conditions for independent, high-impact research. FAU is recognized as one of Germany’s leading universities in chemistry and innovation, with a strong track record in knowledge transfer and industry collaboration.
Applicants should hold a diploma or master's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or chemical engineering. While expertise in in situ and operando methods is welcomed, candidates without direct experience are also encouraged to apply. Excellent English language skills, flexibility, commitment, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team are essential. The university promotes gender equality and encourages applications from women and handicapped persons if equally qualified.
To apply, send your application and supporting documents by email to Prof. Jörg Libuda at [email protected]. Early applications are encouraged. For further information about the group and research environment, visit
