Experimental PhD Position in Learning Mechanics of Soft Matter (Biocompatible Hydrogels) – ERC Project Learning Matters!

Prof. Karen Alim’s group on Biological Physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Campus Garching is seeking an experimental PhD student to join the ERC-funded project 'Learning Matters!'. This research opportunity centers on implementing learning mechanics in soft matter, with a particular focus on biocompatible hydrogels. The successful candidate will design hydrogels that form the walls of synthetic vein networks, which can be trained for efficient transport, paving the way for robust vein networks in synthetic organs. The project explores two key mechanical properties of hydrogels: flow shear adaptation, where channels dilate and shrink in response to flow shear similar to real veins, and chemical training, where exposure to chemicals permanently softens the material, imprinting wider channels and enabling the network to learn specific flow patterns. This innovative approach embeds learning directly into the mechanical behavior of matter, bridging experimental and theoretical research in a highly interdisciplinary environment. Applicants should possess an outstanding Master's degree or equivalent in physics, bioengineering, or related disciplines, with knowledge in soft matter or biological physics. Experience working in interdisciplinary and international teams, programming skills, and strong English communication abilities are required. The position is open to candidates from diverse backgrounds and is suitable for disabled persons, who will be given preference if equally qualified. The offer includes a three-plus-one-year contract (TV-L E13 75%) with a flexible start date as early as April 2026.
