About this position
PhD opportunity in Theory of Physical Learning at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Campus Garching, in Prof. Karen Alim’s group on Biological Physics and Morphogenesis.
The project is part of the ERC project Learning Matters! and focuses on the physics of continual learning in a non-neural system: Physarum. The successful candidate will develop a theory for the physical mechanisms behind learning mechanics in a network-shaped single cell, studying how flows, chemical concentration, shear force, and viscoelastic tube walls interact to produce adaptive responses. The work connects physics, soft matter, biological physics, complex systems, statistical physics, and materials science, with relevance to synthetic hydrogels and learning in soft matter.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in physics, applied mathematics, or a related field; background in soft matter/complex systems physics, biological physics, or statistical physics; programming skills; strong English communication; and interest in interdisciplinary, international teamwork.
Funding and contract: two-plus-two-year contract, TV-L E13, 75% position. The start date is flexible and can begin as early as October 2026.
How to apply: submit a single PDF with CV, publication list, transcript of record, a one-page motivation letter on your research interests, and contact details for two recommendation letters. Send it by email to Prof. Dr. Karen Alim at [email protected] with the subject line “PhD Theory of Physical Learning”. Deadline: 2026-09-10.
TUM notes its privacy policy for application data and encourages applications from women, disabled applicants, and others who would contribute to diversity.
