2 Doctoral Researchers in Machine Learning and Cybersecurity (SafeEarth Research Programme)
The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, is seeking two Doctoral Researchers for the SafeEarth Research Programme within the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The positions are based in the Computer Science and Engineering unit, offering a vibrant research environment with global collaborations and innovative projects.
BISG is renowned for its multidisciplinary research in data analysis, robotics, secure programming, and bio-IT. The SafeEarth Research Programme, supported by the Research Council of Finland, focuses on recognizing and tackling safety and security threats, including natural hazards from solar storms, minimizing humanmade cyber attacks, and understanding protective actions through language and communication. The research areas span optimization of industrial manufacturing, Industry 4.0, health and well-being systems, environmental monitoring with mobile robots, dependable IoT, and seamless artificial-natural systems.
As a doctoral researcher, you will investigate wireless network security topics, focusing on new threats arising from the rapid adoption of AI techniques in wireless systems. Your work will include exploring AI as a tool for enhancing wireless security and automation, ensuring the security of AI lifecycles integrated with wireless systems, and detecting stealthy attacks caused by adversarial AI. The role requires a strong understanding of security principles, wireless systems, mathematical knowledge, and proficiency with AI/ML tools.
The University of Oulu offers a supportive and enthusiastic team, wellness benefits (ePassi), career development opportunities, and a flexible work-life balance. The Buddy Programme and Spouse Network help newcomers settle in Oulu. The institution holds the HR Excellence in Research label, reflecting its commitment to researchers' working conditions and career development. Finland is recognized for its high quality of life, safety, excellent education system, and competitive economy.
Applicants must have a Master's degree in wireless communication, computer science, electrical engineering, cybersecurity, or a related field, completed before starting the position. Essential qualifications include hands-on experience with machine learning workflows and programming, theoretical knowledge of AI/ML security, strong analytical and mathematical skills, familiarity with statistics and optimization theories, and knowledge of wireless communication systems (such as 3GPP, 5G NR, Open RAN, AI-RAN). Fluency in English is required, and Finnish language skills are appreciated. Experience in national or European research projects is beneficial. Candidates must meet the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS).
The positions are fixed-term for three years, with a starting gross salary of approximately 2700-2800 € per month (before taxes), based on Finnish university demand level chart (levels 2-4) plus up to 50% personal performance component. Additional benefits include wellness support, a trial period of six months, and access to staff development programmes.
To apply, submit your application online by 10 May 2026, including a cover letter, CV (following Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity guidelines), and an initial research plan (max. 2 pages).
