This EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) PhD position at ETH Zürich focuses on bioprinting next-generation functional tissues, aiming to advance tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The project is hosted in the Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Laboratory led by Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong, part of ETH Zurich’s Department of Health Sciences & Technology (D-HEST) and the Institute for Biomechanics. The lab specializes in innovative light-based 3D printing techniques for precise cell guidance and multi-scale porosity, addressing critical clinical challenges. The position is part of the EU-funded Print4Life doctoral network, which includes 8 host institutions and 6 partners across Europe, providing advanced research training in additive manufacturing of biomaterials and tissues. The successful candidate will develop functional tissue models by integrating high-resolution 3D bioprinting with in situ perfusion systems, enabling direct graft maturation. Research goals include creating printable hydrogel systems for high-resolution scaffolds, designing microfluidic systems for tissue viability monitoring, and testing tissue functionality in response to inflammatory stimuli or therapeutic drugs. The project involves collaboration with other doctoral students, academic institutions, and industry, including short research stays at Brinter (Finland) and Uppsala University (Sweden). Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related field and demonstrate expertise in computational fluid dynamics, cell culture, molecular biology, bioprinting materials, and biological evaluation of tissue constructs. The position requires compliance with MSCA mobility rules and offers a fixed-salary PhD contract funded by the MSCA Print4Life network.
