Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biochemistry of Microalgae and Food Ingredients (Ref. BIPD-2/CESAM/Algaelicious/2026)
A postdoctoral fellowship is available at the University of Aveiro, within the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), Department of Chemistry, under the
ALGAELICIOUS
project, focused on microalgae as a sustainable food ingredient. The project explores innovation in nutrition, functionality, and flavor, with a strong emphasis on biochemical characterization of microalgal biomass and extracts.
The successful candidate will work on Chlorella biomass cultivated under different conditions, performing proximate analysis, lipid composition studies, and fatty acid profiling. The research also includes evaluating the bioactive potential of produced extracts through antioxidant assays and anti-inflammatory tests in cell-based models. The position additionally involves participation in project meetings, outreach activities, and preparation of technical-scientific reports.
This fellowship is primarily aimed at researchers with a PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field. Candidates should have proven experience in food-product biochemical characterization, particularly involving microalgae, lipid extraction, and chromatographic characterization by LC-MS and GC-MS. Experience with bioactive extract screening and biological activity assessment in cell models will be an advantage.
The fellowship is funded through Portugal 2030 / COMPETE2030-FEDER 01495500 and ALGARVE-FEDER-01495500. The monthly maintenance allowance is €1,901.00, and the grant may include reimbursement of Voluntary Social Security if applicable. The initial duration is 6 months, starting in November 2026, with the possibility of renewal for additional 6-month periods subject to available funding and regulatory limits.
