PhD in Environmental Science: Microplastics and Arctic Clouds

Stockholm University is advertising a PhD position in Environmental Science focused on microplastics and Arctic clouds . The project, titled Plastic in Arctic Clouds: Microplastics and their influence on ice-nucleation (PAC-MAN) , investigates whether microplastics are present in Arctic clouds and how they may affect cloud microphysics, ice nucleation, and climate. It combines field observations in polar regions , laboratory experiments , and atmospheric modelling . The lab work includes developing and improving analytical methods, analysing field samples, and studying the physicochemical properties of different microplastics. The results will be used in modelling studies to estimate the broader climate significance of airborne microplastics. The position is hosted by the Department of Environmental Science and the Atmospheric Science Unit (ACES) at Stockholm University, a research environment with strong international links and experience in Arctic and global field measurements. The post is a doctoral employment rather than a scholarship, and it is funded by the Swedish Research Council . Eligibility: applicants must meet general doctoral admission requirements and specific subject requirements. This includes an advanced degree or equivalent, plus at least 45 advanced-level credits in biology, chemistry, geoscience, physics, or meteorology, including a 30-credit independent project, and at least 30 additional credits in other natural science subjects. Strong English communication skills are required.
