PhD Positions in Water and Sediment Modelling for Sustainable Landscape and Resilient Communities
Utrecht University (the Netherlands), in collaboration with the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), is advertising
two PhD positions
under the NWO-funded project
“Systems Approach for Creating Sustainable Landscape and Resilient Community in Riverine and Coastal Socio-Ecological System.”
The project is centered on
water resources
,
sediment modelling
,
water and sediment management strategies
,
delta management
,
hydro-morphodynamics
, and
riverine/coastal socio-ecological systems
. The research aims to understand how delta management and local water-sediment strategies can be harmonized across multiple scales to support sustainable landscapes and resilient communities.
Research themes include building delta-scale sediment reference and context for WSM strategies, using process-based modelling to identify large-scale (in)balance in sediment budgets, assessing the effects of human activities on sediment budgets and local stability, and defining the quantity and spatial dimensions of interventions for strategic delta planning. The broader project also examines coastal hazards, storm surge impacts, flood risk, climate change, and the long-term effectiveness of interventions such as polders and nature-based solutions.
Applicants should have a relevant academic background and an MSc degree from an internationally recognized university. Strong English proficiency is required; TOEFL/IELTS may be needed if the MSc was not taught in English. The call seeks enthusiastic, broad-minded, dedicated researchers with strong analytical ability, numerical modelling skills, and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment. Full-time availability and readiness for fieldwork in coastal Bangladesh are important.
The positions are full-time for
48 months
and are funded through the NWO project. The advertisement mentions a fellowship package, a gross monthly allowance of
2,500 Euro
during Utrecht University visits, economy-class travel grants between Dhaka and Utrecht, and temporary accommodation support.
Application deadline:
10 June 2026.
How to apply:
Email the application to Professor Md. Munsur Rahman and Dr. Shampa with a CV, letter of intent, and names of three referees. Use the subject line
