Postdoctoral Researcher in the ALICE Experiment
The University of Jyväskylä's Department of Physics is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Finnish team in the ALICE experiment, starting September 1, 2026. This 1+2 year position is embedded within the Center of Excellence in Quark Matter (CoE), a vibrant international community recognized by the Finnish Research Council and comprising around 35 researchers across theoretical and experimental teams. The CoE offers a unique environment for research in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and relativistic heavy-ion physics, combining both experimental and theoretical approaches.
The successful candidate will perform jet analysis with Run 3 data collected by ALICE and contribute to the ALICE forward calorimeter (FoCal) upgrade. Prior experience with data analysis in large experimental collaborations, instrumentation, electronics, and test-beam measurements is highly valued. The position requires a completed PhD degree in a relevant field before the starting date, and all qualification requirements and language skills are governed by University of Jyväskylä regulations. A six-month trial period applies at the start of employment.
The University offers a starting salary of approximately 3,800 EUR per month (subject to taxation), which is above the Finnish median salary. Additional benefits include a settling-in allowance for relocation, excellent occupational healthcare, and access to broad public healthcare services. Jyväskylä, located in Central Finland, provides a peaceful environment with beautiful nature, numerous outdoor activities, and a lively campus area. Finland is known for its high standard of living, free schooling (including English-language options), affordable childcare, and robust family benefits.
The Department of Physics is active in materials physics, nuclear physics, and particle physics, with research spanning nanomaterials, quantum technologies, light-matter interaction, nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, applied accelerator-based research, and the physics of strong interaction and ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Experimental research is conducted in the Accelerator Laboratory, Nanoscience Center, and at international facilities such as CERN and FAIR.
Applicants must submit their application via the University of Jyväskylä online form by March 1, 2026. Required documents include a CV, motivation/cover letter, PhD degree certificate, compact portfolio of relevant skills, and two letters of reference. An active ORCID profile is mandatory. Applications sent via email will not be considered. For further information, contact Associate Professor Sami Räsänen at [email protected].
The University of Jyväskylä is committed to fairness, transparency, and diversity in its recruitment process, promoting HR Excellence in Research and adhering to the European Charter for Researchers. The institution values equality and encourages qualified applicants from all backgrounds to apply. The campus is home to 2,500 experts and 14,500 students, fostering wisdom and well-being in a human-centered environment.
